Subject: Complaint against Spectramed Medical Aid

Description: On 26 October 2011 I was notified via sms from Spectramed that my membership has been suspended. I contacted their call centre. I was informed that my monthly premium increased in July 2011 when I received a salary increase. A mass e-mail was sent to my HR department informing them of all government employees whose premiums were to be increased. Due to whatever reason, the increased premium was not paid to Spectramed.

Prior to 26 October 2001, I was at no time informed by Spectramed that my premium was increased in July 2011. I was never given an opportunity to resolve this issue with HR before being suspended from the scheme. The decision had already been taken before i was informed.

The outstanding amount in arrears is R388. I believe that I was held to ransom by Spectramed, who adamantly refused to lift the suspension without this amount being paid. I requested time until Friday (28 October) to rectify the situation and was denied.

The outstanding amount was paid on 26 October 2011 by way of an electronic funds transfer. Proof of payment was faxed to Spectramed on 26 October from a postnet at a cost of R14. Spectramed has still not lifted the suspension because they cannot find the fax that was sent to them.

I am outraged that Spectramed unilaterally decided to increase my premiums without informing me and thereafter suspending my membership because such increased amounts were not paid.

I would appreciate any assistance you can give me in this matter.
